        ZOO CONSERVATION PROJECTS

London Zoo's recent advertisement, "Without zoos, you might as well tell these animals to get stuffed," distorts reality by highlighting the myth that animals will disappear forever without zoos like London Zoo. Zoos were originally created for entertainment, and conservation became the buzzword in the zoo community. The World Zoo Conservation Strategy (WZCS) estimates there are about 10,000 zoos worldwide, with 1,000 representing quality collections capable of participating in coordinated conservation programs. However, this estimate is likely an underestimate of the total number of zoological establishments.

The World Zoo Conservation Society (WZCS) document has a flaw in its reasoning, as it places naive faith in its 1,000 core zoos. The criterion for inclusion might be that the zoo is a member of a zoo federation or association, which has had dubious members. The American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (AAZPA) and the Federation of Zoological Gardens of Great Britain and Ireland have had dubious members. The situation is even worse in developing countries with limited resources for redevelopment. Colin Tudge, author of Last Animals at the Zoo, argues that if the world's zoos worked together in co-operative breeding programs, they could save around 2,000 species of endangered land vertebrates. However, there are no facts to support this optimistic proposition. Today, approximately 16 species have been "saved" by captive breeding programs, and 20 species are being considered for zoo conservation programs.
